Understanding the Craft

About Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster is a premium decorative wall finish with roots in ancient Italian craftsmanship. It is made from natural lime putty combined with crushed marble dust, applied by hand in multiple thin layers and then burnished to create a smooth, polished surface with remarkable depth and luminosity. The result is a finish that resembles natural stone or marble, with subtle variations in tone and texture that make every wall unique. Unlike paint, Venetian plaster becomes part of the wall itself, creating a seamless, breathable surface that develops character over time. Explore our services page to learn more about the finishes we offer.
Regular plaster serves as a functional substrate for paint, while Venetian plaster is the final decorative finish. Paint sits on the surface, but Venetian plaster is built up in multiple hand-applied layers that are compressed and burnished to create genuine depth, movement and a tactile quality that paint simply cannot replicate. The natural lime and marble composition gives it a translucent quality that interacts beautifully with light, producing a rich, luminous effect. Venetian plaster is also significantly more durable than paint, naturally resistant to mould and mildew, and breathable, making it a superior long-term investment for both residential and commercial interiors. See the difference for yourself in our project gallery.
When properly applied and maintained, Venetian plaster can last decades. The natural lime content means it actually hardens and strengthens over time through a process called carbonation, where it gradually reverts to limestone. Many historic buildings across Italy and Europe still feature original Venetian plaster finishes that are hundreds of years old. With the premium Italian materials we use and our meticulous application technique, you can expect your finish to look stunning for 15 to 25 years or more with minimal maintenance.
Yes, absolutely. Venetian plaster is naturally breathable and resistant to mould and mildew, making it an excellent choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and other moisture-prone areas. For wet environments, we apply a specialist protective wax or sealant that adds a waterproof barrier while preserving the beauty of the finish. This makes it ideal for shower walls, splashbacks, and areas around sinks. Many of our clients choose Venetian plaster as a luxurious alternative to tiles in their bathrooms, as it creates a seamless, grout-free surface that is both practical and visually stunning. We offer a wide range of finishes to suit any interior style. Our core finishes include classic smooth Venetian plaster with a polished marble effect, high-sheen burnished plaster for a mirror-like reflective surface, metallic finishes in gold, silver, copper and bronze for a statement look, textured stone effects for rustic or industrial aesthetics, and matte or satin finishes for a softer, contemporary feel. Every finish can be customised in terms of colour, texture depth, and sheen level. We work with an extensive palette and can colour-match to any specification. From Consultation to Completion

Our Process

Project timelines depend on the scope and complexity of the work. A single feature wall typically takes 2 to 3 days, including surface preparation, multiple coats of plaster, and the final burnishing and sealing. A full room can take 4 to 7 days depending on size, the number of coats required, and the complexity of the chosen finish. Metallic and highly polished finishes may require additional layers and drying time. We always provide a clear timeline during the quotation stage so you can plan accordingly, and we work efficiently to minimise disruption to your home or business.
We handle all wall preparation as part of our service. Walls need to be structurally sound, dry, and reasonably smooth before Venetian plaster can be applied. We will assess your walls during the initial consultation and carry out any necessary preparation work, including filling cracks, sanding uneven areas, and applying a suitable primer or base coat. If there are any significant issues such as damp or structural damage, we will advise you on what needs to be addressed before we begin. Our goal is to ensure the substrate is perfect so the finished plaster looks flawless.
Venetian plaster can be applied over existing paint provided the surface is in good condition, firmly bonded, and properly prepared with an appropriate primer. We will assess the existing surface and carry out any preparation needed to ensure strong adhesion. Wallpaper, however, must be fully removed before application, as it does not provide a stable enough substrate for the plaster to bond to. Glossy or textured paints will also need to be sanded and primed. During your consultation, we will inspect the walls and advise on exactly what preparation is required.
Yes, we strongly encourage sample boards as part of every project. Before any work begins, we create bespoke sample boards in your chosen finish, colour, and texture so you can see and feel the exact result before committing. This allows you to compare options, see how the finish looks under your own lighting conditions, and make confident decisions. Sample boards are included as a standard part of our consultation and quotation process, because we believe you should never have to guess what the final result will look like.

Protecting Your Investment

Care & Maintenance

Venetian plaster is remarkably low-maintenance. For routine cleaning, simply dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster. For marks or light stains, use a slightly damp soft cloth with mild soapy water, then dry gently. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemical products, as these can damage the polished surface. In bathrooms and kitchens where a protective sealant has been applied, the surface is even easier to wipe clean. We provide detailed aftercare guidance with every project so you can keep your plaster looking pristine for years to come.
Yes, one of the great advantages of Venetian plaster is that it can be repaired. Minor scuffs and marks can often be buffed out with a soft cloth or fine abrasive pad. For deeper scratches, chips, or localised damage, we can carry out a seamless repair by re-applying and blending new plaster into the affected area. Because each finish is hand-crafted, skilled repair work can restore the surface so the repair is virtually invisible. We offer a repair and restoration service for all our past projects, so you can have complete peace of mind. Contact us if you need a repair.
Yes, we stand behind every project we complete. We provide comprehensive aftercare guidance on completion, covering cleaning, maintenance, and how to protect your finish long-term.
